May 28, 2008
So what is keyword density anyways?
Keyword Density applies to the written content of your page and is the specific density of a certain keyword or phrase on a particular page.
KWD = Number of times a keyword appears in a page/Total number of words on that web page
The sweet spot for developing keyword density is between 5% and 10% for this article (web page) I managed to score the following…
Keyword / phrase: keyword density
KWD = 6/123 = 4.9%
Using Long Tail Analysis in Keyword Development
March 20, 2008
Exploding sales figures of online business (or any business for that matter) takes in depth analysis. When it comes to looking at the keyword that people use to find your website or a web page on your website you must first understand or develop an understanding of how people find the pages on your website. If you are looking to improve search engine traffic then this means focusing on those little keywords that make up the 1 or 2 hits to your website and optimizing the site and pages within the website based from there because they equal 80 to 90 percent of the results.
Keywords with 3 visits and above = 17 hits or 2.9%
Keywords under 3 visits = 629 hits or 97.1%
Total keywords = 646 keywords
Keyword Development from the Top Down
February 28, 2008
As I’ve written about before you can use Google Analytics to collect and harvest the keywords that your customers and viewers use to find you. So what do you do once you’ve got the keywords and how do you best apply them to your website’s structure?
Design your keywords from the top down
What do I mean when I say “designing from the top down”? Top Down refers to taking a global view and moving to a detailed view of your website in terms of keywords and keyword development.
For Example
Let’s say you have a website for a landscaping business
Landscaping Website Homepage - keywords related to general landscaping would appear here
Landscaping Website Lawn Maintenance Packages Web Page - keywords are tiered towards lawn maintenance and keywords that are more specifically tailored towards people looking for lawn maintenance packages
Landscaping Website Deluxe Spring to Fall Lawn Maintenance Package Web Page - keywords are focused towards this package, these are the most specific keywords and even though they may attract a lower amount of viewers the conversions will be higher than home page conversions
As you can see sometimes using a top down approach towards keyword strategy in your website can play to a specific advantage for your business.

Using Google Analytics for Keyword Research
February 10, 2008
Google Analytics is a pretty robust tool that allows you to do a lot of things from setting goals to understanding how customers view and experience your website. Understanding how people find and experience your website gives you customer insights as to how they find you and in this case search you out online and your business.
Wouldn’t it be great if you knew which keywords your customers were using to find you? Well now you can using Google Analytics!!!!
Finding the keywords that Google Analytics records is as easy as 1 2 3!
- Log into your Google Analytics Account
- Go to the “View Reports” link
- This will bring you to the Google Analytics Dashboard where you will scroll down to click on “View Report” under the Traffic Sources Overview
- Lastly, click on the “Full Report” link under the Keywords header on the right hand side of the screen and you’ll have a list of keywords that people have used to find your website.
If you use PPC advertising you can further break down the list into “Paid” and “Unpaid” keywords which is a very useful feature for those of you using paid search to advertise your business.
The main reason why keywords are so important, especially to your online business is that this is one way in which customers are targeting the web pages on your website and having a keyword list of used keywords gives you a starting place when you decide to research and write your own custom list of keywords that produce results for your business!
