Not all Search Engine Optimization is Equal

March 17, 2008

I was reading through some of the rules that Google offers people and companies when it comes to hiring an SEO specialist or firm and here they are…

  • Never work with an SEO consultant or firm that contacted you with SPAM – Never talk to anyone who chooses to SPAM you in order to get your attention.
  • No one can guarantee a #1 page rank in Google – Google itself cannot guarantee a first page result on your keywords for your business so how can an outsider guarantee that? That is not the name of the game when it comes to good search engine optimization for your business.
  • SEO does not equal “link sharing” – many novice SEO guys and gals out there talk about link sharing which first of all doesn’t yield excellent results and secondly can be a waste of time. Time your business doesn’t have.
  • Know where your money is going when it comes to your company’s SEO efforts – Without a clear understanding of what you are paying for when it comes to search engine optimization how can you plan for further business spending? How can you calculate your return on investment?
  • Have a contract that includes a non-compete agreement – A lot of companies have the real possibility of traffic stolen (funnelled away) by some shady SEO people, or can lose trade secrets because their SEO person went to the competition who offered money for the intelligence they’ve collected about your business and that is a position you don’t want to find yourself in.

Feel free to read Google’s article as it relates towards finding a reputable SEO firm or consultant. Hopefully you found this to be good “food for thought”.
