Calculating Internal Site Search Metrics in Google Analytics
February 25, 2008
One important set of metrics in a website is the Internal Site Search. How people are able to search your website is of a great importance the larger your site or the broader your audience because it means that you need to understand how customers are able to search and find what they want as soon as they reach your website.
Some of the metrics that Google Analytics can use to calculate your website’s Internal Site Search Metrics are the following…
Visits with Search - number of visits that used your site’s search functionality
Percentage of visits that used site search functionality - this is calculated by the number of visits that used the site search / total number of visits
Total Unique Searches - total number of times the site search was used (excludes multiple site searches with the exact same keyword during the same visit)
Results Page views / Search - page views of search results pages / total unique searches
Search Exits - number of searches a visitor makes before leaving a site
Percentage of Search Exits - Search Exits / visits with search
Search Refinements - number of times a visitor searched after immediately performing a search
Percentage of Search Refinement - percentage of search that resulted in search refinement
Time after Search - Average number of time a visitor spends on a site after searching
Search Depth - The average number of pages a visitor views after searching
Because a great deal of sites use site search functionality and pages are generated dynamically with scripts, internal site search can give you idea about how your potential customers are using your site, areas where you can expand your content/product offerings and an understanding as to how your customers search your website and for what specifically.
