Keyword Development from the Top Down

February 28, 2008

As I’ve written about before you can use Google Analytics to collect and harvest the keywords that your customers and viewers use to find you. So what do you do once you’ve got the keywords and how do you best apply them to your website’s structure?

Design your keywords from the top down

What do I mean when I say “designing from the top down”? Top Down refers to taking a global view and moving to a detailed view of your website in terms of keywords and keyword development.

For Example

Let’s say you have a website for a landscaping business

Landscaping Website Homepage - keywords related to general landscaping would appear here

Landscaping Website Lawn Maintenance Packages Web Page - keywords are tiered towards lawn maintenance and keywords that are more specifically tailored towards people looking for lawn maintenance packages

Landscaping Website Deluxe Spring to Fall Lawn Maintenance Package Web Page - keywords are focused towards this package, these are the most specific keywords and even though they may attract a lower amount of viewers the conversions will be higher than home page conversions

As you can see sometimes using a top down approach towards keyword strategy in your website can play to a specific advantage for your business.

PureWebAnalytics gets a New Contact Form

February 26, 2008

I’ve noticed in the last little while that my goal for the “Contact Us” page was recording results but I wasn’t receiving any emails from the website itself. This brings forth a good question “If you aren’t tracking goals, sales funnels, conversion paths, etc. then how can you be sure that your site is working as designed?I decided to install a WordPress plugin, Contact Form ][, that was easy to install in the meantime while I find a good replacement or write one myself but I am already receiving emails from customers and interested people. So how do you know your website or online business is working if you aren’t analysing your website’s data?

Calculating Internal Site Search Metrics in Google Analytics

February 25, 2008

One important set of metrics in a website is the Internal Site Search. How people are able to search your website is of a great importance the larger your site or the broader your audience because it means that you need to understand how customers are able to search and find what they want as soon as they reach your website.

Some of the metrics that Google Analytics can use to calculate your website’s Internal Site Search Metrics are the following…

Visits with Search - number of visits that used your site’s search functionality

Percentage of visits that used site search functionality - this is calculated by the number of visits that used the site search / total number of visits

Total Unique Searches - total number of times the site search was used (excludes multiple site searches with the exact same keyword during the same visit)

Results Page views / Search - page views of search results pages / total unique searches

Search Exits - number of searches a visitor makes before leaving a site

Percentage of Search Exits - Search Exits / visits with search

Search Refinements - number of times a visitor searched after immediately performing a search

Percentage of Search Refinement - percentage of search that resulted in search refinement

Time after Search - Average number of time a visitor spends on a site after searching

Search Depth - The average number of pages a visitor views after searching

Because a great deal of sites use site search functionality and pages are generated dynamically with scripts, internal site search can give you idea about how your potential customers are using your site, areas where you can expand your content/product offerings and an understanding as to how your customers search your website and for what specifically.

Hiring a Web Design Company in the Greater Toronto, Ontario Area

February 25, 2008

I figured that since I am based out of the Greater Toronto area it was about time to start letting the world (and you) know it. Now there area a number of things that you should consider when choosing to work with a web development company and personally I believe the biggest is “Location, location, location”.

Why is the location of your Web Development firm important?

Let’s say that you need changes done to your website, you are in the Toronto area and your web developer is in India. You have to ask the question “How much is this going to cost me having to talk to someone in India and what are the results going to be like?”

If you have a business then you know how important your time is so naturally having a partner that understands your business and is willing to help you long term and is located locally (like in the GTA) is very important. You may pay more for it but the benefit is having someone local that understands your online business.

Because PureWebAnalytics.com is based in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA for short) naturally there benefits to hiring us to help you with the online portion of your business.
